ADHD Q & A

What is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder?

ADHD is a cognitive and behavioral condition where a child cannot stay focused. Children with ADHD usually are impulsive and have difficulty sitting still.

While it’s unclear what causes ADHD, children who may be at higher risk include those who have or had:

  • A traumatic birth injury

  • Maternal drug use during pregnancy

  • Low birth weight

  • Exposure to environmental toxins

  • Poor nutrition

  • Developmental delays

  • A family history of ADHD

  • Overexposure to screens at an early age

ADHD can interfere with a child’s ability to develop healthy relationships, feel successful in school, or adapt socially as they get older. For some children, ADHD can make learning in a school setting difficult, leading to educational delays and poor self-esteem

.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

All children struggle with the ability to sit still or focus well when they’re younger. But a child with ADHD may struggle to have control of their bodies or energy as they get older. Usually, a diagnosis of ADHD occurs between the ages of 3-12. For some, symptoms continue into adulthood.

The symptoms of ADHD include inattentive and hyperactive or impulsive behaviors. These include:

  • Difficulty following instructions

  • Lacking attention when spoken to

  • Difficulty focusing or completing tasks

  • Forgetfulness or being easily distracted

  • Frequent fidgeting or restlessness

  • Becoming bored easily

  • Talking fast and interrupting often

  • Constant movements, such as running or climbing

  • Difficulty sitting still

Although these are common behaviors for children, they should improve as your child ages. If you feel your child may have ADHD, Dr. Fayad evaluates your child using a scientific assessment tool that can positively diagnose ADHD. If your child has ADHD, he designs an individualized treatment plan.

What are the treatments for ADHD?

There is no cure for ADHD. Treatment focuses on decreasing stimulation, preventing injury, equipping you and your child to deal with impulsive behaviors, and teaching coping mechanisms for difficult situations.

In addition to this parent-and-child education, your child’s treatment plan may include:

  • Medications

  • Behavioral therapy referrals

  • Nutritional counseling

  • Family therapy

Dr. Fayad works closely with you and your child to create an effective plan of care that equips both of you to manage your child’s ADHD well.
