Strep Throat Q & A

What is strep throat?

Strep throat is the common name for a condition caused by an infection of streptococcus bacteria. Strep causes a sore throat, in addition to other symptoms that can leave your child feeling poorly.

Because Streptococcus bacteria live in the body, children who get strep throat are susceptible to getting it again.

Strep bacteria live in the nose and throat and can be spread easily through sneezing, coughing, or touching someone who is infected. Because of this, strep is highly contagious and should be evaluated and treated quickly to avoid spreading the infection to others.

What are the symptoms of strep throat?

The strep infection typically causes a sore throat, but your child may have other symptoms as well, including:

  • Fever

  • Fine rash

  • Headache and body aches

  • Painful swallowing

  • Dry, irritated throat

  • Sore muscles or joints

  • Enlarged or tender lymph nodes

  • White streaks on the tonsils

  • Red spots in the mouth and throat

  • Nausea and vomiting

When your child has these symptoms, especially if they’ve had strep before, it’s important they get tested for strep. Dr. Fayad offers same-day visits and rapid testing to confirm if your child has strep throat.

How can I avoid the spread of strep throat?

If anyone in your family has strep throat, it’s essential to follow some simple guidelines to ensure the infection doesn’t spread. Most importantly, it is essential that you teach your child to cover their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Other guidelines include:

  • Frequent hand washing, especially after sneezing or coughing

  • Throwing away and avoiding touching all used tissues

  • Avoiding sharing food or drinks with infected children

  • Avoiding contact with others, especially when symptoms are present

  • Disinfecting surfaces like bathroom counters, light switches, door knobs, and tables

Strep throat is contagious for up to three weeks after symptoms have gone away. It’s vital to continue these habits, even after treatment. If your child tests positive for strep throat, Dr. Fayad may order antibiotics, over-the-counter medications, or home remedies that may relieve your child’s discomfort.

For a same-day visit and strep throat test, call the office or schedule an appointment online with Pediatrics R US.
